How can you be sure that your marijuana seeds will last as long as possible? Our tutorial on how to store cannabis seeds (but also all other seeds) shows you exactly how to do it right. When stored correctly, cannabis seeds can remain viable for years or even decades. At Seeds66, we store all our cannabis seeds (and those of other manufacturers) in large industrial refrigerators at a constant 4 degrees Celsius.
We have summarized the most important points here:
The 4 most important factors in the storage of cannabis seeds
- Dry storage – Moisture is the biggest enemy when storing seeds, so keep them dry! In other words, don't let the seeds come into contact with water or be exposed to high humidity.
- Temperature – The best storage temperature is 4–5 degrees Celsius.
- Darkness – Protect your seeds from light! Light and UV radiation reduce the germination capacity of seeds.
- Airtight – Be sure to store your cannabis seeds in an airtight container.
Where should I store my cannabis seeds?
- In the fridge – the best place in the fridge is the vegetable drawer! It is the coolest place in the fridge and has almost no temperature fluctuations.
- Any cool, dry place – Any place that tends to stay cool, dark and dry, with little temperature fluctuation. If you have an old cellar, for example, where the temperature is the same in summer and winter, this is also a suitable place.
Tips for long-term storage of cannabis seeds
- Constant temperature - Temperature fluctuations are poison for your seeds. Off to the vegetable drawer!!
- Store in original Seeds66 packaging – This is the perfect packaging for storage. (The seeds are in an airtight plastic tube and then in our aluminum bags.)
The best way to determine whether your cannabis seeds are still viable is to simply germinate them. Here is our tutorial on how to germinate cannabis seeds for the best germination rates.
